I was wondering what people do in the few minutes before the curtain opens, when you perform at places with a sitting, waiting audience and a curtain...
I usually have my intruments already on-stage when possible, or in my hands. I think I just kind of mindlessly pass the time, which is not necessarily the best preparation. But you never really know how much time you have...

Re: Warm Ups
Thu, January 27, 2005 - 5:50 PMI have to dance while I wait. I have horrible stage fright, I literally tremble so I have to practice deep breathing and move in some way to calm down. If it is a tight space with other dancers waiting I practice my belly flutters. Calms down the butterflys already in my stomach. -

Thu, January 27, 2005 - 6:25 PMI move around and stretch a bit- get my body warmed up. Try to center myself with a few breaths right before going out. -

Re: Warm Ups
Fri, January 28, 2005 - 4:47 PMDepends on what kind of show or what character i play.
Last year, for Into the Woods, I played the Wolf. So i would do yoga stretches, a little tai-chi , and then some quick suzuki-style hi/low centering poses.
Right now, for Batboy, I'm playing Rick, so i just bounce around on my toes, maybe a little boxing. A lot of posturing and preening.

Re: Warm Ups
Sat, January 29, 2005 - 3:53 AMI looked at your profile, sis, and being a percussionist myself, one of my fantastic teachers taught me some hand/wrist stretches that are from what he learned in Aikido. I also know a couple from my training in JKD, and a real good "shake-out" to finish it off. If you're any kind of drummer, then you know how twitchy you can get....

Re: Warm Ups
Fri, May 20, 2005 - 4:27 PMAfter finger stretching, I like to sleep before performing. It gives my damaged brain a chance to heal and forget about any problems I might be focused on. If sleep isn't an option, then acting like an idiot is my second choice.

Re: Warm Ups
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 10:45 AMBeing a dancer, I always do a bit of I stretching backstage but I think that is fairly typical. If we aren't the only act, I also love to watch the show because it really getting me mentally psyched and energized to perform as well.
But my favorite thing that helps me to prepare to go on stage is what I'd call the "big group hug". Khafif has a tradation of all getting into a circle, locking arms, and really focus on building positive energy. We typically hug each other and say lots of positive things that are truely heartfelt. It really helps me to present my personal best and to focus on positiveness of the entire group.

Re: Warm Ups
Fri, July 1, 2005 - 8:00 PMThe last show for which I did wardrobe assistance and run crew had five women in the cast. Before they went on, they all felt each other's boobs. -

Re: Warm Ups
Sun, July 3, 2005 - 7:25 AMI don't have much of boobs myself, what to do, what to do...

Re: Warm Ups
Tue, July 5, 2005 - 6:32 AMThis is probably the most scariest moment of the whole evening, when you are finally on stage things are moving you don't have time to actually think about being scared or worried.
The thing that works for me is that I play the whole thing over in my head as best I can, and then after that I just clear my mind and watch for the person going on ahead of me that is my que to stand up and be ready.

Re: Warm Ups
Tue, August 9, 2005 - 2:14 PMMy usual routine is filled with stretching and finger/wrist warm-ups. On top of that, I never go full, full out on the first song. ONE, I don't want to burn myself out by over doing it right off the bat, and TWO, I need the first tune to get my posture right and shoulders to loosen up. Mostly, it still takes me a few songs before I am sufficently warmed-up. With most venues not having proper facilities available for a complete warm-up, much has to be done during the performance. Not ideal, but it is reality.

Re: Warm Ups
Tue, August 9, 2005 - 4:30 PMNot haviong played out in quite a bit, in the rock and roll world your usually at the bar drinking or talking to some girl or guy when one of your bandmates grabs you and pushes you towards the stage. That's about it from what I've seen these days. -

Mon, February 27, 2006 - 6:39 PMYou KNOW what "I" do..but we wont mention that LOL;>
Usually we are doing last minute pinnings and costume checks...making sure nothing is coming undone, falling out or stickin' together.
After that its usually last minute stretchs, some pranayama.... -

Re: Warm Ups
Mon, August 21, 2006 - 4:20 PMI have just had a bit of a chuckle reading some of these posts. Now I can admit I walk around in small circles and not feel out of place… lol However, warming up before a performance is crucial to the performance and I probably need to think of something better to do than that but I guess in those last few minutes, the best thing is to stay calm and focus on what it is you are performing and walking around in small circles helps me do that. It’s a way of blocking out distractions.
